Wonderful sitting outside overlooking the river. Ever thing I adored the hotel. Bathroom needed a better clean. Bed was comfy, lovely location. Location was lovely , and the waiter was great. Amazing view from the 2nd floor executive double room, Excellent size room, lovely gardens and restaurant.
The headboard of the bed smelt very musty. Had to pay extra for a slightly later checkout. Great views from our room. Additional cost for a cooked breakfast. Lovely location on the river and close to the hospital. I felt very uncomfortable about having to argue my point. I was given full breakfast but this was not a good start. In the evening we went to the bar to buy 2 coffees.
The very nice barman apologised for the high price In hindsight I should have refused to pay. I have never paid such a ridiculously high amount Sort this out please Nice room in main building. We arrived about 15 minutes early and were told to wait in the reception area, or in the bar. We did the latter. Heralded sculptor and craftsman Wharton Esherick traded hand-carved furniture with Hedgerow in exchange for acting lessons for his two daughters.
Created in the s, the Esherick table in the green room is still used for receptions after theatrical productions. The Esherick-designed staircase beside the front entry doors foreshadowed the famed spiral staircase at his home studio near Paoli. The large, tiled overhanging roof is reminiscent of an Italian villa.
This white house with black trim was built as designed by Will Price in It was the center of Price and Walton family activities. Herbert was a craftsman who made iron, stained glass, woodwork and furniture. His brother, Will, became a young draughtsman under the tutelage of Price and worked with the architectural firm, later building homes and contributing much to civic and cultural life in Rose Valley.
Herbert Walton built this iron-working shop. Of interest are the anvil on the front porch, the stained glass in upper floors and the carved squirrel on the roof dormer. It was built for Henry Hetzel, a young craftsman who personified the Arts and Crafts movement. In order to supply the existing 19th-century homes nearby, the water tower itself probably pre-dated the Rose Valley community. The central tower building was eventually turned into rooms after town water came to Rose Valley. Will Price lived in a few of the rooms during the summer, when the rest of his family vacationed in Maine.
In , Herbert and Frank Walton expanded the house. Later, their son, Billy, added a couple of units for the family. The dining room still has the original built-in cabinetry created in the evolving Colonial Revival style. Entire inventories of late nineteenth century and twentieth century quilt pattern publishing sources, some frequently numbering hundreds of quilt designs each, are recorded in Rose Lea's indexes.
Although each index documents a single published source, the aggregate size of the total project is massive and comprehensive. Rose Lea's indexes constitute a notable contribution to quilt history. Cuesta Benberry. In the very early 's, I subscribed to a new quilt magazine publication.
Like most family endeavors, it had a certain folksy charm that appealed to me and I read each issue I received monthly from cover to cover. But more than interest in the articles, I became enamored with the quilt block illustrations. There were so many designs, and the wonderful quilt names that reflected eras in American history, that I was fascinated.
I began collecting quilt patterns and quickly learned that it is an infectious occupation. The more information you acquire, the more you realize what is still out there to discover.
