Excellent birthday info about Miranda! I liked her story about the Gambians reaching out to her on her special day! And Eric, that book app creator looks great! How neat your sons can make their own books!! What a lovely birthday story! Happy Birthday, Miranda only about a week late! I had only been in the country for about six weeks or so, but it was long enough to feel a little homesick.
What was I doing 5, miles from home? Living without running water and occasional electricity?

In a primarily Muslim country during the time America was about to capture Saddam Hussein? As my birthday rolled around, it was Thanksgiving week back home. I pictured all of my relatives gathering at my grandmother's house, eating familiar foods. I invited a friend over and decided to whip up some makeshift American food to make myself feel better. Before I knew it, people kept showing up It then occurred to me that this was more than coincidence.

I was being thrown a surprise party by people who had only known me for six weeks, and had never thrown a birthday party before! Most Gambians don't celebrate birthdays. That night, I learned one of life's most endearing lessons: people around the world are much more similar than they are different, and if we extend our hand or cross a bridge into another culture, people are ready and willing to take that hand or meet us halfway across.
I'm happy to say that I am still in touch with many of these friends and I have returned to The Gambia four times since that trip. I plan to continue to show my gratitude to the welcoming people of The Gambia for I continue the 1 Million Books for Gambia literacy project. Email This BlogThis! Labels: Miranda Paul , November. A plus sign is supposed to give adults access to new titles. Unfortunately, for many stories the reading level is too high for the targeted ages.
Some titles have nearly 40 words per page at a seventh-grade level per Flesch-Kincaid scores. Modern photos fill the screen with crisp colors, and cartoon quality is comparatively good. There's also no pause button, which would really be nice, especially since mode changes and library deletions can only be made within titles.

Art is good quality and design is clean, but iStoryBooks would really benefit from interactivity that supports each story, as well as higher-quality fiction. Kids listen to stories about transportation, animals, and people.

Printed text matches each narration, so young readers can try to follow along, but with no highlighted words or interactive features they may not be interested. The app is OK without a help section, but some small on-screen buttons, the option to pause, and better navigation would improve the interface.
