Their translations, as intermediaries, become their real source and instructor. Through their translations, the poets have created their own intimate instructors in poetry. Barnstone, We have seen several unique instances where Baudelaire clearly put his personal mark on the translations, and when Poe is being utterly Poe, in such examples as sleep-waking or metaphysicianism , Baudelaire standardizes and neutralizes this Poe-ishness, while in other places, though there is no call from the source text, Baudelaire fabricates a Poe-ishness or at least a foreignness that was not there in the first place.
This latter movement amounts to an appropriation of the source text, an appropriation which remains hidden behind a smokescreen of apparent literalness.
